Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri

Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council/National Economic Advisory Council for three terms: from 2013 to 2017, from 2017 to 2018, and from 2018 to 2022. He had been the member of National Advisory Council of the Planning Commission of Pakistan first from 2013 to 2018 and later from 2018 to 2022. During 2021-2022, he convened the National Coordination Committee on Prime Minister’s Agriculture Transformation Plan. Earlier, he remained the member of the Board of Management (Board of Directors) of Pakistan State Oil from 2009 to 2011 where he chaired the Board’s Audit and Accounts Committee. He also served on three judicial commissions (formed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad High Court, and Lahore High Court) on environmental issues.
Currently, he serves as a member of the Pakistan Climate Change Council. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and chairs the Board’s accounts and procurement committees. Besides, he is a member of the Government of Punjab’s Vice Chancellors’ Search Committee for Agricultural Universities.
Moreover, Dr Suleri is actively involved in different regional policy-making forums. He currently co-chairs the Board of Climate Action Network, South Asia, and is also serving as a member of the Permanent Organizing Committee of the South Asia Economic Summit. Earlier, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation) Think-Tank Network. He also served as the lead expert for World Economic Forum’s “Transformation Mapping” initiative from Pakistan.
Dr Suleri has represented Pakistan in various official and civil society delegations, including the UN Sustainable Development Summit, the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COPs), and WTO Ministerial Conferences. His research interests include the political economy of sustainable development, geoeconomic cooperation, food security, and climate change.
He is a regular guest speaker and delivers lectures on different aspects of sustainable development to career civil servants, officers of the armed forces as well as parliamentarians. He is an acclaimed writer, and besides publishing in academic journals, he also contributes his policy analysis on sustainable development issues in mainstream print and electronic media. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the SDPI peer-reviewed journal: “Journal of Development Policy, Research, and Practice.” Dr Suleri earned his PhD in Food Security from the University of Greenwich, UK.
